Butterfly Habitat Success . . . Apr, 2019

Last year, Drew and I helped our new Southside WaterFronT (SWFT) neighborhood association write a $3,000 grant to fund a Butterfly Habitat Project that involved the creation of six raised garden beds filled with plants to attract and nourish butterflies.  Aside from increasing the butterfly population, the purpose of the project was to increase engagement at all levels among our neighbors.  Our midterm report recently showed that we exceeded our goals in every area, including, the number of neighbors involved in planning, construction, planting, maintenance, and attending “Butterfly Social” events.  In addition to appreciating the beauty of the garden for years to come, we look forward to continuing to use it as a focal point for neighbor engagement and expanding its role to provide an educational experience for very young children.
